I have been trying for years to get close to a Belted Kingfisher, but to no avail. Usually by the time I see one, I am too close and it takes off. When I see one in flight it always lands way off in the distance. This past Friday was a special day and one finally let me get within range (50-100 feet). Here she is... An interesting fact about Belted Kingfishers is that they are an example of reverse sexual dimorphism..... meaning the female is the more attractively colored than the male, and.... the male is the one that sits on the nest.
