An image has the power to take its viewer back in time, or tell a story to the viewer. Take, for example, an image of a help-wanted sign taped to the door of a downtown shop, or a pair of worn out Keds with a broken shoelace. Or perhaps a bike with training wheels lying beside it. It could be a saddle, or a volleyball left on a sandy beach. Perhaps a hockey stick stuck in a snowbank, or a speeding ticket.
And when a viewer pauses to reflect on an image, their mind creates the accompanying story using bits of their own life experiences. The image becomes a wordless essay, written uniquely in the minds of each viewer.
And thus the reason for the assignment.
Create an image intended to invoke such stories in the thoughts of the viewer. With 5,000 people traveling through the Caedes site daily.. imagine all of the stories one single image could trigger. Entitle the image using the following naming convention, and encourage them to leave a few words of their own story in the Comments area.
Entitle your image like so: "Remember when?" [your title]" For example:
Remember when? First speeding ticket
Remember when? Worn out Keds
Remember when? The training wheels came off
Entitling them in this way will help identify images that are
specifically posted for this assignment, even though they will still be posted into their normal categories.
Remember, this is not a contest; there will be no adjudication, no prize, no ribbons. The reward is just a communion of viewership and the richness of the comments that the pictures will draw.
