The flowers in this picture are called Desert Gold. The reason this is rare is because there is seldom a bloom like this in Death Valley. They say it is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. I have also heard that this is the best wildflower bloom in 50 years. For the flowers to bloom, they need rain, which in Death Valley, falls less than 2 inches per year, and sometimes not at all. The rain must be properly spaced through the winter, with no drying winds. The flowers seeds are covered in a waxy coating and lay dormant until these conditions all come together. So you see, it is rare indeed. And pretty, too.
