The building, perched atop the Acropolis and is the result of different stages of construction: the derivation of the Lombard Romanesque style (1072 - 1104) was added in the mid-thirteenth century. In the Gothic style the Caetani chapel. On March 24, 1160, Pope Alexander III pronounced the excommunication inflicted on Frederik Barbarossa. Still inside the cathedral was canonized St. Clare of Assisi.
