Alatri a majestic city with polygonal walls, anciently was the Ernici main point, an Italic people belonging to the group Osco-Sannitico. After having entered in contact with Rome during the royal period (fifth century, BC) and later with Bishop nominated during the Christianity was a domain of powerful Conti Family then later on possession of the Papal States. The Acropolis complex, is among the most impressive and evocative buildings. The monumental boulders make up a compact curtain wall on which there are two gates: Porta Maggiore, which presents a unique monolithic lintel and Porta Minore, equipped with an inclined plane to climb higher to the audience, where the pagan temples were destroyed to make the existing Cathedral. In the Cathedral houses the famous relic of the Host incarnate, miracle 1227. A second circuit wall, always in polygonal, extends over 2 km and square towers were added in the Middle Ages, which reinforced the defensive system also gateways to the city.
