Along highway 50 just south/southwest of South Lake Tahoe is the small town of Twin Bridges. From here you can walk up to Pyramid Creek which flows out of Desolation Wilderness directly from Avalanche Lake. In the spring and summer, with the strong runoff, the water flows so that it creates this amazing "Horsetail Falls/Cascades (upper area) as it flows downhill to the broader, less turbulent area shown here in my picture. This area burned last year from the Caldor fire but the area is still beautiful despite the blackened trees in the same vicinity of this picture.
