Eastern Screech Owl (Family Strigidae, Otus asio). The eastern screech owl stands about 8.5 inches tall and has a wingspan of 20 inches! There are two color phases, red and grey, but both have beautiful yellow eyes. Their "ear" tufts help them hide from predators by disguising them as a broken branch. The Screech Owl is the smallest of all owls. They never max out at more than 8 to 9 inches. When they eat, Screech Owls feed on mice, rats, and other small game/prey. Like all other owls, the Screech Owl is nocturnal. Here we have "Acorn", male, red phase, hatched in 1995.
