This was once a 120 metre high hill - Kildare Hill. Starting in 1864 Blue Lake was created by gold miners sluicing and chipping through the quartz and by 1933 it had become a 168 metre deep pit. The miners used an hydraulic lift to suck the water and gravel out to where it could be worked for gold.
The sides of the pit got too close to the town by 1934 and mining was stopped. The hole was allowed to fill with the blue water which is coloured by minerals.
I think it has a lunar appearance against the quartz tailings. This is directly opposite The Vulcan HotelThe Vulcan Hotel, just on the other side of the road. Thank you for viewing and any comments :)
