A rear view of the beautiful wooden neo-gothic Anglican Church of St John at Waikouaiti which was the first Church built in Otago, New Zealand, opened in 1858. The architect was Benjamin Mountfort, and it was financed by Johnny Jones, a whaler turned farmer pioneer and philanthropist in the area.

When I visited recently I had a conversation with a Church warden who was eager to show us inside to see the fine stained glass windows.
I did not get any good shots but anyone interested can see the one in this photo taken from the inside HERE.
I can not remember the name of the artist but apparently he was noted for adding little quirky things to his work. In one of his windows elsewhere, of the nativity scene, he added a baby elephant peeping out from behind a sheep. The novelty in this window is the bare left toes of the sleeping guard lower right, which have popped out of his footware.

Canon 450D. Thanks for viewing and for any comments.
