I saw this fine old Laburnum tree in the grounds of Queen Mary Hospital which was built by the Department of Defence in 1916, adjacent to the hot mineral springs of Hanmer Springs, New Zealand. The twin-octagonal design of the Soldiers' Ward accomodated 200 victims of shell shock and neurasthenia. It was later converted into a Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in 1943 and was controversially closed down in 2003 due to insufficient funds.
The gardens are over 100 years old as the site was originally the site of an 1897 Sanitorium which burnt down, so this old tree has lasted well, and will have brought pleasure to many in difficult circumstances in the past.
The Hospital still stands and is now under Public Ownership open to view, along with the gardens.
