A New Zealand native tree which along with the Pohutukawa is often referred to as the NZ Christmas Tree.
Southern Rata grow to about 15 metres tall. I have one in my garden which was recently cut back and it has not flowered well this year, so when I spotted this one in Christchurch I took this shot. It was breezy and the flowers are very fine and fragile - hence the blurriness of the blooms.
The Department of Conservation set up a Charitable Trust called Project Crimson in 1990 to preserve these species and since then over 70,00 new trees have been planted.
For Friday :)
