The interior of Old St Pauls, Wellington,NZ.
Built in 1866 entirely from Native timbers, it is said to be one of the best examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the world. The interior resembles the upturned hull of an Elizabethan galleon, with exposed curved rimu trusses.
The flags hanging in the nave include the ensigns of the Royal Navy, the New Zealand Merchant Navy and the United States Marine Corps (second division), which was stationed in Wellington during World War II.
Until 1964 when a new larger Cathedral was built it was the Anglican Cathedral of Wellington. There was a battle to save it from demolition and it was finally purchased by the NZ Government in 1967 and restored.
It remains a consecrated church and is a venue for special services.
