I love the organic quality of the older areas of Shanghai. People were given carbon copy caves stacked and squashed and they ignored the implied statement "accept it" and customized with abandon. You see the little door, notice the bricks above it? They slump, clearly the owner of this flat wanted a door here, so one was created without worrying that everything would fall down, and it didn't. There are many other elements about this scene I like. How old is that bike do you reckon? Exactly WHAT is that over on the left of the image? Do I spy an art easel behind the chair? Here's a hint, under the concrete sink on the right, what can you see? One window is barred the other looks like a glimpse into a Hobbit's library. The paving you see in the foreground is THE footpath, nothing you see here is chained or locked down! Just a fascinating glimpse into a somewhat opaque lifestyle as I was passing by to somewhere else.
Enjoy.

I do believe I have spied a chain between the bike and the chair, perhaps the chair is chained to something?
