I firstintroduced you to Chief, now meet Pule (pronounced Poo-Lay). Pule is a master carver who makes AMAZING bowls from the branches of Monkeypod trees. First he carves them into shape, then he buries them in the black sand found at the Menehune Pond (for 2-3 weeks they stay buried). The black sand colors the bark dark brown to black. If he wants a red or brown highlight, he then buries the bowl in the red clay soil. Finally when the colors areright, he carves them with traditional tools using only traditional Samoan and Hawaiian symbols. Pule is also an accomplished percussionist. In the forefront, Chief is doing a traditional fire dance, while Pule (in the background) rapidly drums away. This one I dedicate to Terri and Curt. Their quick wit and humor keeps us all on our toes, and is the "fire" that keeps Caedes forums fun.
