The Ministry of War in the 1st district of Vienna was built from 1909 to 1913 by Ludwig Baumann. After being completed the 'Reichskriegsministerium' (Ministry of War of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire) was relocated there. This ministry was responsible for leading and administration of the army and navy. Between WWI and WWII the building with about 3000 windows was used by the 'Bundesheer' (Federal Armed Forces) followed by the Nazi-German Wehrmacht. During WWII the building was hit by a bomb which caused only little damage. While the final battle in Vienna it was heavily damaged, but in 1952 several ministies could move there. In 1913 on its roof a radio installation was placed and short after war started in 1914 another followed which was not used at all. In 1923 after modification of the first radio installation the Ministry of War become the birthplace of austrian broadcasting.
