The Viennese Burgtheatre is by far the theatre with the greatest tradition in the German speaking countries. Originally built in 1741 as a ballroom and called "the castle" (Burgtheater-"Burg"="castle"), the institution developed to an art temple of the language culture with its singular "Burgtheater-German".

Comedies and all modern works were banished and categorically rejected. Only since 1983 it has been permitted to also applaud or voice disagreement at the end of a play, which was forbidden before. The middle sector is semicircular curved to the outside with long side wings on the sides. The massive and sumptuous decoration inside reminds strongly of the baroque style. The noble, in ivory, gold and red held auditorium can seize 1,500 spectators. Stars like Wolter, Bleibtreu, Dorsch, Gold, Wessely, Hörbiger, Meinrad, Voss or Brandauer were/are part of the "aristocracy of the castle".
