Dubrovnik is an old city on the Adriatic Sea coast in the extreme south of Croatia. It was based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.

Dubrovnik is nicknamed "Pearl of the Adriatic".

The old town is enclosed by its city walls which can be walked all around. In high season it's impossible to find a parking lot, even at the sites you have to pay for. When we visited Dubrovnik the first time we went 16km south to the next little city and from there we reached Dubrovnik by boat. Travelling time approx. 45 minutes. This photo is from our second visit, when we parked in the new town and took a cab to the old town.
