Vienna's only remaining municipal Biedermeier-cemetery was founded in 1784 after the hygiene decree of Emperor Joseph II.

On this cemetery residents of today's third district were buried along with residents of parts of the first and second district.

In the area of the shaft graves the Mozart memorial can be found. The exact place of his grave is not known.

Already 90 years after its opening St. Marx Cemetery was closed due to the enormous expansion of Vienna's population. The size of the Biedermeier cemeteries was insufficient, so Vienna's Central Cemetery was opened.

After WWI the four Biedermeier cemeteries were altered into parkways. Hans Pemmer, a teacher of Vienna's third district succeeded in his attempt to save St. Marx as an open-air museum.

Here's a list of some famous people who were buried here:
Birago, Birkenstock, Calafati, Strasiripka (Canon), Degen, Diabelli, Donner, Fendi, Karadzic, Karajan, Kornhäusel, Madersperger, Montoyer, Morawetz, Paradis, Parhamer, Pfeiffer, Rosenthal, Streicher, Thonet und Ypsilanti.

I did some kind of manual HDR here...
You can see it on the leafes ;o)
