The church in the centre of the picture is The Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas, affectionately known as St Nick's. It is the parish church of Liverpool and is situated down on the waterfront (the building on the right of the picture is The Liver Building).

The building work being carried out in front of the church is the long awaited Leeds-Liverpool Canal Extension. This is a scheme to connect the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to the docks via The Pier Head.
