Antony Gormley is the most well known living British sculptor. He is most famously known for his work "The Angel Of The North" which is probably Britain's best known sculpture after Nelson's Column. His work, Another Place, consists of 100 life-sized cast iron statues( cast from his own body) placed over a 3km long by 1km wide stretch of beach. They are so placed that at low tide all or nearly all the statues are exposed but at high tide most are submerged.

Another Place was initially intended to be installed at Crosby Beach, Merseyside (immediately opposite New Brighton at the mouth of The River Mersey) from July 2005 to November 2006 and then move to New York. However, the work proved so popular that Antony Gormley himself said that he wanted the work to stay permanently at Crosby. This caused some controversy as, of course, it had to be paid for, but all difficulties have been overcome and the work is staying permanently on Crosby Beach.
