This is an image of the Mersey from a couple of miles upstream of "Glorious" New Brighton which is at the mouth of the river.

The large grey building on the far left, behind the large tanks, is Camell Laird, ship builders and repairers. The tanks, jetty and engineering stuff is the Tranmere Oil Terminal. Here ships unload crude oil and it is piped down to the Stanlow Oil refinery 15 miles away. Beyond the oil terminal you see Liverpool with a cruise liner moored by The Liver Buildings. There are small docks further upstream on the Liverpool side at Garston and just nearer the mouth is one of the largest container docks in the country (these are just going to be extended and adapted to take all but the very biggest ships in the world).

There is a big River festival this weekend marking the fact that The Mersey is the lifeblood of our area.
