This would have been a very bad place to be standing on the morning of May 18 1980 Most of the 56 people killed never saw it coming when half the mountain slid off into a huge pyroclastic avalanche. I saw it all happen from about three miles away. luckily from a ridge on the other side away from the blast. Its something that one will never forget. I do hope you enjoy this scene of recovery.
