The 'Grote Kerk' (Tall Church) of Veere, Zeeland, The Netherlands, was captured by me two days ago. The second name for this church is 'Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk' ('Our Lady Church'). The construction of church and tower started about 1348 and was stopped in 1521. The tower was never fully completed as it was intended to be three times as tall as it is now. The dome on its top was added after a fire in 1686. The maintenance of this tall church (tall in respect to the number of Veere's inhabitants) took too much toll of the very little town. Therefore parts of the building were given new uses in order to collect money. In 1975 a restoration was done which was aimed at preservation, not reconstruction.
