I'll try to explain what can be shown in this image.

Zeeland is a province of The Netherlands. Belgian work horses were mainly used by Zeeland farmers to work at their fields (e.g. to plough). When the work was done some Zeeland farmers practiced a sport with use of these horses. This sport is called, in Dutch, 'ringrijden' (tilting at the ring). 'Ringrijden' means that a farmer is riding on his, relative huge, horse without use of saddle and stirrups. While the horse is galloping at full speed, the farmer has to catch a ring with a lance. The ring is placed in a holder and hangs, by means of a rope between two poles. The farmer who has caught the biggest number of rings in a destined number of rounds is the winner of the match. This sport is 'big fun' for the horses, participating farmers and spectators as well and is still done during the summer season.

A couple of years later the wifes or partners of the farmers started to practice this sport as well. The only difference was that the ladies are not sitting on a horse, but - accompanied by the husband or partner - in a, with flowers decorated, gig. The gig however can be drawn by either a work horse or a 'normal' horse. The woman (instead of the farmer) has to catch the ring with the lance now while the farmer has 'control' over the at full speed galloping horse with its gig. This 'game' is called 'sjezenrijden' (gig riding).

Nowadays both 'ringrijden' and 'sjezenrijden' are folklore sports, primary to show the tourists in Zeeland some traditions of the past. Therefore the participants are wearing traditional clothes.

This picture is taken in Gapinge, a small village at the peninsula Walcheren, Zeeland, The Netherlands.

The farmer's wife is waiting for a drink now, which will be served by her hubby during a break of the event.

This image may give you any idea of 'ringrijden' with work horses while this one may give you an idea of 'sjezenrijden' with 'normal' horses.
