This tower was originally built in 1470 as a brick church tower of the St. Willibrord Church in the village of Westkapelle, peninsula Walcheren, Zeeland, The Netherlands.

The tower however was never completed by a spire. In 1817 the tower got a red-colored superstructure containing the lighthouse optics as the tower was adjacent to the North Sea. In 1832 the church was destroyed by a fire, but the tower remained intact so that it still functions as an alternative lighthouse up till now.
