This B&W image is taken on the sea front of Flushing, Zeeland, The Netherlands. It shows a the sculpture of Frans Naerebout (1748-1818)

Frans Naerebout was not only an excellent harbor pilot but a brave lifesaver (rescuer of shipwrecked) as well (he rescued hundreds of people on several occasions). In Holland we still have the saying 'Onverschrokken Naerebout'. It's only said to a person who has shown his or her courage and is fearless.

On the right, one can see the Gevangentoren (only available with a Dutch text). De 'Gevangentoren' (prison tower) is a relic of the Western Gate of the 16th century. By the citizens of Flushing this tower is also called the 'bomb free tower', because it had in its original state a with soil covered dome and very thick walls, made up of alternating layers of natural stone and brick. Nowadays this monument has a pointed roof and is used as a restaurant and bar.
