The 'Grote Markt' (Big or tall market place) has been the central square of the center of Mechelen for centuries. It's dominated by the Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, the interior of which I have shown you with this photograph. On the other side is the City Hall (not visible on this capture however).

Historic buildings dating from different times and built in various styles, including the 16th-century Renaissance and the Rococo from the 18th century, are situated around the 'Grote Markt'.

The 'Grote Markt' has been closed to traffic since 2004 and now there is an underground car parking lot.

During its construction, archaeologists found an old cesspool and a road from the 13th century. There were already market stalls along this road then.

There's still a lively market here every Saturday.
