Most inhabitants of The Netherlands live below sea level.

To prevent the land from being flooded by the sea and people are drowning, a complex protection system has been created consisting of primary and secondary sea walls.

The primary seawall consists of relatively high sand dunes and dikes/embankments along the coastline. The land behind the primary seawall is divided into segments known as Polder. Such a segment is surrounded by a less high dike/embankment and is called secondary seawall.

Such a secondary seawall aka inner dike is often overgrown with vegetation such as trees, shrubs and wild flowers.

This capture was taken on May 8th, 2022 in the area where I live (Zeeland, The Netherlands). It shows a part of such an inner dike in spring dress.
