Galena, Illinois was a prosperous lead mining town in the late 19th century, at one time larger than Chicago. Ulysses S. Grant lived there for a few years, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had a debate there, and it was a fort during the Black Hawk War. Today, the main street and hundreds of old houses have been preserved, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
