Chester's ancient Roman fort was built under the Roman name of Cilurnum. The fort is similar to other sites along Hadrian's Wall. The northeastern quadrant appears to contain a pair of barrack blocks, each with cadre rooms at the east end and a series rooms for the enlisted men. It is believed that the rooms were fronted with columns. The small size of the rooms led archaeologists to believe that it housed a cavalry squadron in eight rooms. Infantry units normally contained ten rooms.

To the south (right), is a stone-lined drainage ditch.
