I found this tree of strange posture at the Frampton Plantation, currently a Visitor Welcome Center in South Carolina. Directly to the right the land slopes sharply away as a result of earthworks carried out during the Civil War by the Confederate army under Robert E. Lee. These earthworks came in handy since a battle was later fought here. In other words, the tree may not be leaning. It might be ducking.
