....The Macclesfield Canal at Bollington was built in the early 19th century by Thomas Telford to serve as a main transport link to the many mills and factories that ran alongside the canals. The barges were of course originally pulled by horses. This is one of many bridges that allowed the horse to cross to the other side so that it was not pulling on the same side all the time.
