....by some quirk of the imagination, I thought I was in Athens for a moment! ;) ...the Acropolis, also known as the National Monument is situated on top of Calton Hill in the centre of Edinburgh city - sometimes referred to as 'Athens of the North'. I walked up the hill on Tuesday, it was my birthday by the way, and I was just happy because of where I was and the sun was shining too and what a reward when I got to the top - the views around the city were amazing! The monument, which was built in 1822, was designed as a replica of the facade of the Parthenon in Athens a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, and was in commemoration of the soldiers who lost their lives in the Napoleonic wars.
