This young Red Tail Hawk is beginning possibly the toughest period of its young life, its first winter. If it can make it to spring it will have a good chance of living a long life. Immature Red Tail Hawks do not have that characteristic red tail. It will appear in later molts. This is possibly a signal to other Red Tails that this bird is not ready to mate and raise young.
