These females are some of the more dominant. Notice the sand is dry and not wet. They reside between the surf and cliffs. You would think having prime real estate and a dominant bull would make everything great, but nooo!!! They fight over almost everything;a pup other then their own wanders too close, young bull chases them into another one's turf. Just about anything sets them off. Having this location is very important. They are less likely to have the high tide wash their pup away. It is more difficult for a young male to reach them. This means that these females have a better chance of raising their pups to maturity, passing their genes on. So even the females fight to retain their place in the order of things.
