Butte Montmartre is the highest point in the city, and sitting atop the butte is Sacre Coeur. It was completed in 1914 and is actually a double monument: to the end of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune Massacre of 1871. You can see it from just about anywhere in the city and hundreds of people find themselves there at the end of the day to watch the sunset, which, if it's not cloudy, is incredibly magical. Also, that series of windows just under the top dome is open to the public and if you climb the 300 steps (WHEW!!!) to get there, it offers just about the best view of any place in the city. This basilica and merry-go-round at its base were major players in the movie Amelie. This is a must stop for me whenever I'm there. Paris, France; July, 2016.
