Once Upon a Time........ In the year 1838 a beautiful house was constructed for Quaker, Joseph Hooton, in what is currently known as Mount Laurel Township in Burlington County in the state of New Jersey. This historic home is situated on the site known as The Farmhouse which consists of 23 acres. This house is a charming example of Federal period architecture, and at the time, people said it was the finest house in the neighborhood. In the current year, 2018, a bittersweet story surrounds its future existence. The house has been vacant for some time and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Residents in the community wanted the house restored and circulated a petition to save this historic structure. The township did an assessment and it was determined that restoration would cost $1.7 million dollars. Since the house is quite deteriorated and contains asbestos that would require additional remediation costs. Our story does not have a happy ending as the township has signed a contract with a demolition contractor. It saddened me to read that the house is slated to be razed by the end of the summer. Currently the house is still standing. I visit the site on a regular basis in my travels as there is much to be photographed there...... But all is not lost. Perhaps, in the future this site will be converted into a wonderful park/recreational area where friends and family may gather to enjoy a new revised space. To be continued.............
