Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA (Acadia National Park). Created by glacial retreat, the mountains and lakes were formed by the scraping of thick sheets of ice against the earth. However, Jordan Pond was created by a deposit of glacial moraine at one end of the pond, visible in the shallow water, that blocked the valley to form the waterway. The two small mountains to the left are called The Bubbles. Those familiar with the Hudson River School of Art, painters who depicted dramatic mountain and water scenes in the US in the 1800s, painted views of Mount Desert Island while perched on the mountains. Their work gained the attention of the country's wealthy, who began to vacation on the island and who eventually donated land to create Acadia National Park. One of the ponds used as a water supply, kayaking, canoeing and fishing is allowed, but no direct human or pet contact is allowed in Jordan Pond. Enjoy! Critique is welcomed.
