Juneau, Alaska, USA. On overcast days such as this, the blue of the glacier ice is particularly noteworthy. The glacier is 12 miles long, 1.5 miles wide, and ranges in depth from 400 to 800 feet. It is hard to perceive the immense scale of the glacier and surrounding mountains; trees on the peninsula in the lower left of the image put the size of the glacier in perspective. Several days after our visit, a lake beneath the glacier burst, flooding the lake and river with large quantities of water. This is a retreating glacier, a product of natural causes. Of concern is the shrinking depth, considered to be a product of climatic changes.
