Denali National Park, Alaska, USA. In the sub-arctic land area, elevation changes result in dramatic differences in plant and animal habitat. The trees, seen in the foreground, that are from fifty to one hundred years old, are small and stunted because of permafrost requiring shallow root systems, in addition to the long, harsh winter conditions. However the shrub growth surrounding them are vital to the animals that live here. In the distance is tundra growth, then elevations leading to no plant growth. The mountains seen here are in the six to seven thousand foot elevation range. Enjoy!
