Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. His formal name, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette, was commissioned as a military officer at the age of 13. At the ripe old age of 24, he led troops in the Siege of Yorktown that led to the end of the military conflicts in the American Revolution. Troops were mobilized in Williamsburg and marched the thirteen miles to Yorktown. When he returned to France, he was elected a member of Estates-General, wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, with help from Thomas Jefferson. Upon his death, he was buried in a cemetery in Paris under soil from Bunker Hill. A reenactor portrays the Marquis in this image.
