Charles City County, Virginia, USA. The kitchen rooms have large fireplaces and ovens, enough to prepare meals for the Hill family and guests. When the plantation began in 1632, workers were white indentured servants. Soon, Africans were brought to the plantation, also as indentured servants, as was done on many plantations. Soon again, this practice morphed into slavery for newly obtained Africans. By the 1780s, there were 193 slaves working on Shirley Plantation. It is sad that the beauty of this plantation was sustained on the backs of slaves.
