Torrey Pines Preserve, La Jolla, California, USA. Indigenous to this locale, the pine tree, named after Dr. John Torrey, a botanist. The two colors of the strobili indicate their gender, yellow-male, red-female. The trees grow to be up to 56 feet tall, with needles that ken be 11 inches long. Torrey pines are able to grow in this semi-arid environment.
