La Jolla, California, USA. The Scripps Oceanic Research Institution, part of University of California San Diego, does some exciting work, some of it starting with boats leaving this pier. Scripps Pier is a noted photography site, one of the reasons I stopped here. However, high surf advisory warning were issued along the coast, and waves were hitting the sea wall when I arrived. I wouldn't have minded wet feet, but the strong undertow might have made keeping camera and tripod in hand too much of a challenge. The surf advisory didn't stop the surfers, however. The shore patrol, stopping to observe the surfers, two visible among the waves, offered warnings of danger that were refused. The surfers continued surfing, the patrol continued patrolling, I continued on to other sites.
