Everglades National Park, Florida, USA. A few cool evenings, followed by warm and sunny days meant that the alligators were finding a dry spot on the shoreline to warm up their body temperatures. The knobby bumps on their backs, osteoderms, have blood vessels that provide a means of controlling body temperature. Being hard and scaly, they provide protection to the alligator while allowing great flexibility.
