Rimrock, Arizona, USA. At the opposite end of the well from the cliff dwellings, ground level dwellings were built along the rock face. When US citizens traveled westward, places like Phoenix were settled (1867), bringing a variety of entrepreneurs. One such individual was George Rothrock, a restless soul who tried a number of trades and lived in a number of places before he tried photography, something he pursued for twenty-five years. After time in California, he moved to Arizona. In Phoenix, he built a photo studio. In 1877 and 1878, he took photo tours of parts of Arizona. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to inform visitors to the well of his photography business, Rothrock painted this ad in 1878. Due to the rock overhang and arid conditions, the ad remains in its original state.
