In our gardens we have a number of varieties of lilies. For too many years, red lily beetles organized an army to overtake all of the plants. Left to their own devices, the beetles devoured leaves and blooms before opening. Somehow the bulbs survived and tried again the next year. Starting several years ago, I do a soil drench in the early spring with a potion that keeps the beetles at bay. This year, we saw blooms that had never made it to maturity. Here is one of them, with its pastel yellow and orange, photographed in the late afternoon / early evening.
