In Cizov, near the Czech-Austrian border, they have preserved a small part of the iron curtain. The several kilometres between the fence and the actual border was a highly militarized no-man's land.
When I grew up, our image of Europe more or less ended there. Although for western citizens it was possible to visit, it was seldom done because of the bureaucratic hassels. Now you can just cross a bridge or walk around a sign on a field, and you have crossed the border - from both sides.
