I don't take many self-portraits, for good reason. Sunday though, I hauled along an extra camera to show the type of area I shoot in and what my macro rig looks like. The body is an 18 megapixel Canon 60D, the lens is the Canon MP-E 65 macro (extended in this shot to about 3X) and the strobe on the front end is the Canon MR-14EX ring flash. I've covered the ring flash in a homemade diffuser made out of a thin layer of polyethylene foam and over that a gym sock with cut-outs. The diffuser breaks up the harsh light from the strobe and gives the pictures a more even, diffuse glow with minimal blowouts. The pistol grip is made by Barska and attached to the lens tripod collar it gives good balance & control to an otherwise awkward arrangement. Sunday was my 54th birthday by the way. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?
