Possibly Pepsis formosa, feeding here on desert milkweed. Knowing that this wasp has one of the most painful stings of any insect in the world didn't encourage me to get really close to them. This shot is from about 2 feet with a 100mm macro lens and a ring flash. They were out in force at the arboretum and one specimen was at least a third larger than this 2 inch one and much more aggressive too. The most intimidating critters I've photographed, so far.
